At our recent Youth and Young Adults Christmas party, we watched the Christmas movie ‘Elf’. In it, the main character, Buddy, shares three simple rules for spreading Christmas cheer:

Treat every day like Christmas.

There’s room for everyone on the Nice list.

The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!

At Christmas, we sing.

Singing Christmas carols is a joyful thing. These are the songs that linger in our minds, spark something within us, and signal that the Christmas season has arrived. More than that, they lift your spirits and remind us of the good news at the heart of Christmas. From the very first Christmas, song has been woven into the story of Christ’s birth. The angels proclaimed “Glory to God in the highest”, Mary sang of God’s faithfulness, and heaven rejoiced at the birth of the Saviour. When we sing Christmas carols, we join that same song of praise, echoing the good news that God has come near.

Christmas carols do more than simply “spread Christmas cheer.” They carry rich theology, the Christian story, the gospel, and hope. Through beautiful melodies, they tell the story of Jesus—His humble birth, His peace, His love for the world, and His coming to reconcile us to God. Often, carols express biblical truths in ways that words alone cannot. They gently touch our hearts,  inviting us to reflect and to be filled with awe that our God became human for our sake.

So, as we spend some time in our Christmas Carol sermons and gather for our carols service on Sunday night, let’s sing loudly and boldly. When we sing carols, we proclaim good news.  We remind ourselves and the world that light has entered the darkness, hope has come near, and God has taken on flesh.

Singing Christmas carols becomes both worship and witness. It lifts our eyes beyond the busyness of the season and grounds us again in the wonder of the incarnation. We sing familiar melodies passed down through generations. We sing words we know by heart. We sing despite the year we have had. And we can sing whether we are joyful or tried.

So, like Buddy the Elf reminds us, let’s sing loud for all to hear. May our carols spread not just Christmas cheer, but the deep and lasting hope of Christ, drawing people towards their Saviour.

Thanks,

Ash
