Does the merry-go-round of life you are experiencing right now feel like it is rotating out of control? In my recollection of earlier days, there were 2 types of merry-go-rounds. The first one was the pretty one at the amusement park with lights and music and animals to sit on that go up and down and rotate as you hold onto a pole, usually called a Carousel. It was slow, steady, enjoyable and calm. The second one was the one in the local park, usually called a roundabout, where a flat wooden disk with metal handles was placed low to the ground, sometimes tilted slightly, and was either pushed by yourself before jumping on or pushed by friends when you were already on. It was fast, terrifying and exhausting. Either way, you were always a passenger on the merry-go-round and had to sit tight and hold on.

Through our study on Genesis, we have seen that God’s creation was slow, it had a healthy rhythm, it was deliberate and it was good. These attributes remind me of the Carousel type merry-go-round. After sin entered the world, the roundabout merry-go-round seemed to take over. Life became painful, deceitful, toilful and terrifying and the world today seems to be in a constant state of chaos. It is so hard not to be on that roundabout merry-go-round because everyone is there. We tend to think that we will be left out or behind if we don’t get on board even if we just need to hang on for dear life.

A well-known bible verse, Psalm 46:10 tells us to ‘Be still, and know that I am God’. Is this verse still relevant to us today in our chaotic, fast-paced roundabout world? How can we be still with everything going on in today’s world? Well, that verse in Psalms comes straight after talk of desolation on earth, wars ceasing, breaking and shattering of bow and spear and burning shields with fire. Sounds chaotic, terrifying and exhausting to me!

So, if God can tell people in those days when chaos reigned to ‘Be still and know that I am God’, then I believe it is relevant to us today. What are you going to change to be more still? How are you going to hop off that roundabout you are on and get on the carousel? How are you going to choose the merry-go-round with the rhythm of life controlled by God: slow, steady, peaceful and say no to the one controlled by people including family, friends and work colleagues?

BE STILL AND KNOW THAT HE IS GOD!!
