Recently, Scripture Union’s Daily Bread has been studying the book of Exodus. As we looked at Chapter 40 (the construction of the Tabernacle), I noticed something very special. The Tabernacle was a portable structure that held the official items of worship. God had given Moses strict instructions on how everything was to be done. God even provided enough people with the necessary skills to ensure everything was finished correctly. It was an impressive portable tent, made from a silver and gold framework, covered with superfine materials, and containing pure gold fittings and implements. Magnificent!
Finally, the priests were to be set apart to serve in the tabernacle. The ceremony included Aaron’s dedication as the first High Priest… Hang on a moment. Aaron? The one who had earlier made the golden calf for the people to worship instead of God? Aaron, the one who nearly caused the entire nation to be wiped out? (Exodus 32) Why would God ever choose someone as fickle and unwise as Aaron to be His High Priest? Surely, there was someone more suitable for the role.
Do you remember the saying, “There, but for the grace of God go I”? It’s not in the Bible, but it fits here. God’s love, grace, and forgiveness toward Aaron were so immense that they outweighed his worst sins. Aaron received a second chance at life. And, through Aaron’s dedication and calling, he became one of God’s greatest servants. The same holds true today; Jesus died for everyone, regardless of how badly we have behaved. We can read about criminals, drug lords, con men, and thieves who meet Jesus and their lives are changed forever. And it’s not just the “bad guys.” All of us can reach out and receive the same forgiveness, no matter how bad we feel we may have been.
That’s why Jesus came—so that anyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life with Him. (John 3:16) What a Saviour! I hope and pray the coming Advent season offers you fresh insights into God’s love.
